The ruling Awami League now plans to complete the pending council sessions of its organisational districts by December backtracking from its previous decision to do the job by October.
Awami League joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said that they could not maintain their timeframe for holding the pending council sessions because of Ramadan and the ‘mourning month.’
He said, ‘I hope we could complete the pending council sessions by December.’
The party, at a meeting of its general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam with joint general secretaries and organising secretaries, on May 26 decided to hold
pending council sessions of different district units by October 30 to reorganise and revive the party at grassroots.
It was the first meeting of the party general secretary after he had been assigned by the party chief, Sheikh Hasina, at a central working committee meeting on May 14 to complete the pending council sessions and undertake organisational tour across the country.
Ashraful at another meeting on June 8 decided to hold council sessions of seven organisational districts – Munshiganj, Barguna, Patuakhali, Kishoreganj, Thakurgaon, Khulna city and Rajshahi by July 19 in the first phase.
The council session of Munshiganj district unit was held on June 19, but the party failed to hold the council sessions of the other district units.
A senior party leader told New Age on Thursday that it was the failure of the party’s general secretary that the council sessions of the six organisational districts could not be held.
‘It is also not possible for the party to hold all pending council sessions by October,’ he said.
AL organising secretary for Rajshahi division Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan said that he had taken necessary steps to hold pending council sessions of different district units in Rajshahi division by November 15.
‘I have already started organisational tour of different upazilas to make them ready for the district councils. I will visit upazilas of Chapainababganj district on Saturday,’ he said adding that council sessions of most of the upazila units in Chapainababganj and Naogaon districts had been pending for long.
The party has so far held council sessions of 13 of the 73 organisational districts since 2007. According to the party constitution, district council sessions have to be held in every three years. The last council sessions for many districts had been held 10-20 years ago.
