New Electricity Connections
Applications pile up
Applications for new electricity connections are piling up with power utilities as the government is struggling to increase the capacity of power generation, transmission and distribution to cope with the growing demand, officials said. The number of pending applications has increased at a rate of over one lakh per month between February and July this year, according data available with the power division.
The number rose to over 12.74 lakh until July which was approximately 7.72 lakh in February, the data showed.
A significant number of the new connections have been kept in hold according to the government policy of limiting the supply within the capacity of power generation, transmission and distribution, a power division official told New Age.
The country is experiencing a shortage of about 1,000MW power this summer, he said.
Besides, he said, complicated process in providing new power connections by the country’s five power distribution utilities also contributed to the cumulating number of pending applications.
The power division data showed that 76,483 transformers out of 720,609 were already overloaded as the power utilities provided connections beyond the capacity.
Of the overloaded transformers, the Palli Bidyut Samitis under the Rural Electrification Board have 73,678 units.
The power distribution companies have received some 47.79 lakh applications since January 2009, against which they provided about 35.05 lakh connections, according to the power division data.
The 12.74 lakh pending connections will push up the demand for power by 1,485MW, the data showed.
Of the 12.74 lakh applications, 9.61 lakh were pending with the 72 Palli Bidyut Samitis under the Rural Electrification Board, the data showed.
The applications for new connections, however, demanded a total of only 271MW of power as most the applicants are domestic consumers.
On the other hand, some 2.61 lakh applications pending with Dhaka Electric Supply Company demanded about 1,091.95MW of power.
Among other utilities, the distribution wing of the Power Development Board has about 26,000 applications pending while the Dhaka Power Distribution Company has 6,777 and West Zone Power Distribution Company 20,500 pending applications.
