JU suspends lecturer, sacks professor

August 25, 2014

The Jahangirnagar University authorities suspended a lecturer for allegedly harassing female students and sacked a professor for locking up students and teachers inside the department.
The decisions came Saturday night from a syndicate meeting chaired by JU VC Professor Farzana Islam. Accounting and information system lecturer AKM Anisuzzaman and Botany professor Md Ali Akondo Mamun were the ones meted out the punishment.
Campus sources said accounting and information department students filed a complaint against AKM Anisuzzaman with the university anti- sexual harassment cell in October, 2013.
Syndicate member Professor Kamrul Ahsan Titu said the lecturer was suspended as he was found guilty after the primary investigation.
The syndicate formed a probe body to investigate the allegations against AKM Anisuzzaman and asked the committee to submit the final investigation report within a month, he added.
Meanwhile, Professor Mamun locked up students and teachers inside the department, on three occasions, as the authorities did not include him in the admission test committee of the 2013-14 session.
On March 14, the department authorities lodged a complaint against the professor with the JU VC and on March 18, his suspension order came from an emergency syndicate meeting.
However, the professor claimed that he had been sacked for his speech against irregularities and corruption of the authorities.
