BNP-blessed candidate wins Pirganj UZ poll

BNP backed candidate, Nur Mohammad Mandal, with a pineapple symbol won the Pirganj upazila poll, held on Monday. He got- 74,942 votes while his nearest contestant Awami League (AL) backed candidate Sayadat Hossain Bakul- with the ‘cup-saucer’ symbol got – 70,887 votes. And the AL’s rebel candidate Maskoara Habib Mukti- with a ‘motor-cycle’ symbol bagged 13,734 votes.
Mohammad Monayem Sarker with a parrot (Tia-pakhi) symbol became the vice chairman, bagging 41,912 votes, while Habiba Begum with a ‘duck’ symbol became female vice-chairman, securing 53,628 votes.
The number of voters in the fifteen unions of the upazila is 262,735. Of them, male voters are 130,153 and the ones 132,582.
Voting was held in some 106 centers of the upazila. Some 1,708 polling officials were engaged in the polling centers.
Some 15 aspirant chairman and vice-chairman candidates including reserved seats for women contested the poll in the upazila.
Of the candidates, three vowed for chairman and eight for vice-chairman and four women for female vice-chairman posts respectively.
Returning officer and additional district commissioner Shahidul Islam confirmed the result. [The result was released officially around 1:30 am, the early hours of Tuesday]
