Cop hurt, ‘mugger’ bullet-hit in city shootout

Two people, including a sub-inspector (SI) were injured in a ‘shootout’ with a gang of muggers at Dholai Khal Hazi Abdul Majid lane under Sutrapur thana in the capital early Tuesday.
The injured were identified as Abdul Hakim, an SI of Sutrapur Police Station and the suspected mugger, Sohel. Being tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 3:15am while an alleged gang of 5-6 muggers preparing for robbery, the SI said.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the snatchers started firing at police who also retaliated with firing, leaving the SI injured and Sohel bullet-hit.
Police arrested Sohel from the spot and later detained another mugger named Shafiqul Islam after a hard chase.
Sohel was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital under police custody while the SI took first aid.
However, the rest snatchers managed to run away from the spot.
Police recovered two sharp weapons from the spot.
