Selectors to continue ‘until next meeting’

July 1, 2015

The Bangladesh Cricket Board extended the contracts of two selectors Minhajul Abedin and Habibul Bashar only until its next meeting, said an official on Tuesday. Minhajul and Bashar, who are serving the selection committee since 2011, ended their term on Tuesday and were expecting to get a fresh term after national cricket team’s recent successes. However, BCB’s chief executive officer Nizamuddin Chowdhury informed no final decision was taken regarding their future.
‘Selection panel will continue as it is until the next board meeting,’ Nizamuddin told reporters on Tuesday. ‘A decision will be taken regarding them in the upcoming board meeting,’ he added, without providing any date for the next meeting.
The tenure of chief selector Faruk Ahmed will end in December 30.
Speculations are high that a group of officials are trying to replace either Minhajul or Bashar with former national cricketer Selim Shahed in the selection committee.
Shahed may also join the committee as an additional selector, said sources.
Nizamuddin said there is no guideline in BCB about the size of selection panel.
‘There were several discussions in the board to see if they can increase at least junior selectors. But then again the decision will be taken in the next board meeting,’ he said.
When asked, a visibly upset Bashar refused to make any comments.
‘It’s BCB’s decision and I don’t have really anything to say,’ Bashar told New Age.
